Spring Training Home of the Houston Astros

Come Spend and Celebrate New Years' in the Heart of America's Number One Tourist Destination. Bring along the family. While you train at the newly renovated Houston Astros Spring Training Complex, they can spend time at one or more of the fantastic theme parksin the Orlando - Central Florida area.
Disney attractions include Disney World, Epcot Center, MGM Studios, Animal Kingdom and Disney Market Place.
Universal Orlando Resorts now has two outstanding parks to visit... Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.
Sea World is another very popular park in the immediate area.
It's less than an hour drive east to the Kennedy Space Center and the Astronauts Hall of Fame. There is plenty of excitement and fun for everyone year-round.
Those who aren't interested in theme parks can relax around the hotel pool in the warm Florida sun.

Dates:
- Start: December 27, 2010 (Check-In December 27. Contact Academy if room is needed before the 27th)
- Registration: Begins 10 a.m. December 27.
- Orientation: 6:00 p.m. December 27.
- End: December 31, 2010 (Check-Out January 1. Contact Academy if room is needed after the 1st)
- Graduation Banquet: 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. December 31.

Cost:
- Tuition - $395. A $150 non-refundable deposit required with enrollment.

Hotel:
- Shared Double: $145 total per person.
- Private Room: $290 total.
The Academy has negotiated these room rates:

Cost includes a catered noon meal provided at the training facility each training day, all training materials, 2 Academy T-shirts, an Academy embroidered combo cap, name tag, class photo, Certificate of Completion and Graduation Banquet. For those staying at the Ramada Heritage Park, transportation to and from the airport and to and from the the training facility will be provided.

Training:
- All training, classroom and field, will be conducted at the Osceola County Sports Complex - The spring training home of the Houston Astros and the Academy of Professional Umpiring's five-week school. (For pictures and information about the training facility, see the "5 Week Professional Course" page on this web site.)
- The Academy Office will be located in a room at the Ramada Heritage Park.

Class Schedules
Start:
Classes are held daily from 8:30 to 5:30, with one night session orientation night. A course completion banquet will be held at 5:30 p.m. on the last training day.

- Communication Procedures
- Use of Equipment
- Handling Arguments/Ejections
- Survey of Official Rules
- Overthrows/Awarding Bases
- Obstruction/Interference
- Checked Swings
- Balks
- Plate Stances/Mechanics
- Developing a Strike Zone
Classroom instruction includes a comprehensive survey of the rule book and proper umpiring procedures. In addition, you will participate in open discussions, rap sessions, and class competition. All our training is designed to take your amateur umpiring to a new level.
Personal plate stances are evaluated and recommendations made which will improve your calling of balls and strikes. Jim and his instructors will demonstrate the three most popular stances used in professional baseball and help you understand the advantages and disadvantages of each. You will work with individual instructors, videotape, and pitching machines to accelerate your learning.
Instructors:
Jim Evans is your chief instructor, working with you each day in the classroom and on-the-field. His assistants are all honor graduates of the Academy, current professional umpires, and instructors at the professional course. Each one is selected for his umpiring, instructional, and communication skills.
