The Jim Evans European Classic 2008
Rouen, France; 7-11 April 2008

Join us for an exciting, fun, and informative clinic with veteran Major League Umpire Jim Evans!

This event is organised in association with ABUA GB, CNAB, Rouen Baseball Club and the French Federation of Baseball and Softball (FFBS)

This Umpire training clinic will be undertaken by Jim Evans, one of the world's best umpire trainers along with 3 former AAA umpires and a former Minor League umpire supervisor. It will take place at the Rouen Baseball club and will include a total of 40 hours of tuition in umpiring.

The package costing ($695) €495 per person includes the following ($1000 (€710) per person if a single room is required):

• 5 days of tuition (classroom and field) on the 2 man system as taught to professional umpires, as well as Official Baseball Rules and dealing with arguments / ejections. It will follow the same format and approximate curriculum as other Jim Evans Classics)
• Bed and Breakfast in the hotel Kyriad (http://www.kyriad.fr/hotel/en/FRA22336.htm) in the centre of the city (in a shared twin room)
• Lunch provided at the field
• All sporting facilities provided free of charge courtesy of the city of Rouen and Rouen Baseball Club www.rouenbaseball76.com (there is a large gymnasium available to us should the weather be too wet and an alternative Astroturf surface if the field is too waterlogged)
• Minibus transport
• Banquet on the final night
• A course Uniform Shirt and Cap
• The course will be conducted in English and French translation will be offered

Travel to and from your home to the event is not included.

The timetable will be approximately as follows:

Sun 6th April:
Students arrive at hotel up until 7pm
8pm introductory lecture by Jim Evans

7-11th April:
8.30am Classroom
12.30pm lunch at the field
1.30pm Field work
5pm Finish

Sat 12th April:
Departure of all participants after breakfast

8th April:
Welcoming reception given by the mayor of Rouen (to be confirmed)

11th April:
Evening banquet and official farewell

On another evening there will be a social event for the students to question the instructors about the game.

Things to bring:

• Full umpire gear (we will be doing some work on pitching/ plate work) and base gear will be required for the rest of the class time.
Notebooks and 2007 Rule book if you have one.
• If you have a glove/mitt and can make plays for fellow umpires, please bring it.

This event is totally self-funded and will be limited to a maximum of approx 50 students on a first come, first served basis.

Students should have a reasonable level of fitness as you will be on your feet at least 3 hours in the afternoons (often running). There is no pre-requisite level of umpiring required for this course as everyone will be treated equally; all umpires welcome!

Classroom instruction includes a comprehensive survey of the rule book and proper umpiring procedures. In addition, you will participate in open discussions, rap sessions, and class competition. All our training is designed to take your amateur umpiring to a new level.

Personal plate stances are evaluated and recommendations made which will improve your calling of balls and strikes. Jim and his instructors will demonstrate the three most popular stances used in professional baseball and help you understand the advantages and disadvantages of each. You will work with individual instructors, videotape, and pitching machines to accelerate your learning. 


Instructors:

Jim Evans is your chief instructor, working with you each day in the classroom and on-the-field. His assistants are all graduates of the Academy, current or former professional umpires, and instructors at the professional course. Each one is selected for his umpiring, instructional, and communication skills.
